AI websites in 2026 — what they are, what they cost, and what to choose

What is an AI website in practice? We explain generation, assembly and custom builds, the most common pitfalls — and real pricing from 1,000 NOK/month.

By Mediseo

In 2026, "AI website" means one of three things: a site generated by a tool in minutes, a site assembled from a polished design system with AI assistance, or a custom build where AI is part of the workflow. The three deliver completely different quality — and completely different prices. With us, a hosted AI website starts at 1,000 NOK/month (billed yearly) with up to 8 pages, hosting, domain and email included, delivered in 1–4 weeks. Larger custom builds start at 132,000 NOK.

The short version

  • Generated: prompt in, site out. Fast and cheap — but template smell, thin content and weak technical quality are the rule.
  • Assembled: a polished design system underneath, AI helping with structure and content, humans doing quality control. The best balance for most small businesses.
  • Custom with AI: developers using AI for speed, not as a replacement. For special requirements, from 132,000 NOK.
  • Our pricing: Starter 1,000 NOK/month billed yearly (template-based, up to 8 pages, everything included), Growth 20,000 NOK/year (with AI content engine).
  • Delivery: 1–4 weeks for most projects — longer for big ones.

Three things "AI website" actually means

1. Pure generation. You describe your business, and a tool generates a complete site in minutes. An impressive demo — but the result looks strikingly like every other generated site, the content is filler, and the technical quality is rarely something anyone has looked at.

2. Assembly. A well-crafted design system sits underneath, and AI helps with structure, draft copy and layout — while humans quality-check design, code and content before launch. You get the speed of AI and the quality of craft. This is the model we use for most small and medium-sized businesses.

3. Custom builds with AI in the workflow. Developers build the solution from scratch and use AI as a tool along the way — for code, testing and content production. AI makes the project faster, not cheaper on quality. This is the level for integrations, logins and special functionality.

So when someone offers "AI web design" or a "website built with AI", it's worth asking which of the three they mean. The price difference between them is tenfold or hundredfold — and the quality difference is at least as big.

Be honest with yourself about which row you're in. If you just need a business card on the web, a generated site beats no site. But if the website is supposed to bring in customers, the cheapest row rarely ends up cheapest.

The pitfalls of AI websites

  • Template smell. Generated sites wear a uniform: the same hero section, the same three cards, the same icons. Your customers can't always articulate it, but they notice.
  • Accessibility. Contrast, alt texts and keyboard navigation are things generators get sloppy with — and the requirements apply to small businesses too.
  • Performance. Heavy scripts and slow loading. Google measures Core Web Vitals; your customers measure their patience. A slow site loses on both counts.
  • Filler text that stays. AI-generated placeholder copy that never gets replaced doesn't rank — and doesn't sell. We've written a separate guide on AI content that actually ranks.
  • Ownership and operations. Who owns the domain? Who updates the site? What does it cost to move? Ask before you sign — not after.

None of the points above are arguments against AI — they're arguments against skipping quality control. The tools make it cheap to make a website. They don't make it cheap to make a good one. Craft is still what separates a site that wins customers from one that merely exists.

How our model works

We build AI websites as assembly with humans in the quality loop, and we run everything for you:

  • Starter — 1,000 NOK/month, billed yearly. Template-based, up to 8 pages, with hosting, domain and email included. No surprise invoices in February.
  • Growth — 20,000 NOK/year. Everything in Starter, plus an AI content engine that produces article drafts on your brief — edited by humans before publishing.
  • Custom — from 132,000 NOK. For integrations, logins or functionality no template covers.

Most projects are delivered in 1–4 weeks, and the process is predictable: the first week is content and structure, then design and build, then review and launch. Large projects take longer — and if yours is one, we say so before we start, not after. You can see the full setup in our builder, compare the tiers on our pricing page, or read more about how we build websites.

What should you choose?

Choose based on what the site needs to do, not on what's newest. If it's supposed to bring in customers, you need three things: a design that doesn't look generated, content that answers what people search for, and code that loads fast. AI helps with all three — but replaces none of them.

If you're not sure which level fits, book a short call and we'll walk through it together. And once the site is live, the next step is getting found — start with the SEO checklist for 2026.
