What local SEO actually is

Local SEO is the work of making your business visible when people in your area search for what you offer. It differs from ordinary SEO in one important way: Google takes the searcher's location into account.

If someone searches "dentist" from their phone in Bergen, Google shows dentists in Bergen — not the best-rated dentists in the country. That is good news for a small business. You are not competing against the whole nation, only against others nearby.

Why it matters for small businesses

For a local business, visibility in your own area is often the most valuable marketing there is. People searching locally usually have a clear intent: they want to book, call, or drop by. They are close to a purchase.

That means a strong position in local search does not just bring traffic — it brings customers who are genuinely ready to buy. And because competition is limited to your area, reaching the top is entirely realistic even on a modest budget.

The three building blocks

Local visibility rests on three things that work together:

  • Google Business Profile. Your free profile that appears in maps and on the right side of search results. This is often the very first thing a customer sees.
  • Your website. The pages that explain what you offer, where you are based, and why someone should choose you.
  • Reviews and listings. Customer reviews, plus your name, address and phone number matching consistently across the web.

None of these works as well on its own. Together, they tell Google that you are a real, active business that is relevant to the searcher.

How to get started

You do not need to do everything at once. Here is a sensible order:

  1. Create or claim your Google Business Profile. Choose the right primary category, add opening hours, your phone number and real photos. A complete profile beats a half-finished one every time.
  2. Tidy up your contact details. Make sure your name, address and phone number are written identically everywhere — on your website, in your profile, on Facebook, and in directories. Even small differences confuse Google.
  3. Ask for reviews. Invite happy customers to leave a short review. Fresh, genuine reviews are among the strongest signals you have.
  4. Build clear service pages. One page per main service, with plain text about what you do and which area you cover.

What to expect

Local SEO often produces faster results than ordinary SEO. Once your profile is complete and you gather reviews steadily, visibility can shift over a few weeks rather than months. It is not a guarantee, but the pattern is clear: consistent, genuine effort pays off.

The most important thing to understand is that local SEO is not a one-off project. A profile that is updated regularly and a steady stream of new reviews will beat an effort that stops after the first month.
